My husbands grandmother was a very good cook. According to him she cooked like she was feeding a thrashing crew and from the sounds of the amount of stuff she cooked she did. This recipe makes a candy that is a lot like the old Black Cow Candy, hard, chewy cna chocolate carmel flavor. You put in your mouth and just suck on it. It's easy to make and goes a long way and lasts a long time. I like to give out little bags of this at the holidays.
2 Cups Sugar 2 Cups White Syrup ( I use Karo) 1/2 Cup Cocoa 1 Teaspoon Vanilla 1 Pint Half and Half Pinch of Salt 2 Tablespoons Butter or Margarine
1. In a heavy saucepan on the stove, mix in the Sugar, Cocoa and Salt 2. Add White Syrup and the Half and Half 3. Cook to Hard Ball Stage (SEE NOTE) 4. Remove from heat and add the Butter and Vanilla. 5. Stir very well and then pour into a buttered cookie sheet 6. Let cool, I usually set mine in the cold garage, once really cool, just pick it up and drop it, it will shatter into small peices.
Now you may have and if you are not used to cooking candy I would reccomend you using a Candy thermometer to measure the temperature. If like me you don't own one or just prefer the old method. Keep a small cup of cold water close to you and after the mixture has thickened drop a bit into the cup and try to make a ball with it, soft ball is just what it says, it holds its shape but is squishy. The hard ball is well- its hard, not concrete but close. This indicates its done, or buy the thermometer.
